Roof and wall cladding, supplied with the frame it fits

Cladding is where a steel building leaks, sweats or burns. The panel core sets the fire class, the coating sets the life, and the details set whether it leaks. We size purlins and girts for the panel you choose and supply the flashings from the same model.

Fire class and insulation by core

Sandwich panels are covered by EN 14509; reaction to fire is classed to EN 13501-1.

CoreReaction to fire (typical)Fire resistanceThermal conductivity
PUR (polyurethane)D-s3,d0 to B-s3,d0Low0.023 W/m·K
PIR (polyisocyanurate)C-s1,d0 to B-s1,d0Limited0.018 W/m·K
Stone woolA2-s1,d0, non-combustibleUp to EI 240 by thickness0.039 W/m·K

Values from a stone wool panel manufacturer’s technical guide; the exact class is on each product’s declaration of performance. Insurers may also require FM 4880 approval.

Rule of thumb: PIR insulates best per millimetre; stone wool is the only core that is non-combustible. Fire walls and plants with strict fire codes usually need stone wool.
By climate

What changes in hot, humid and coastal sites

Hot climates

Reflective coatings and insulation cut heat gain; ridge vents release hot air.

Humid tropics

A continuous vapour control layer stops condensation dripping on goods.

Coastal sites

AZ150 or higher metallic coating and PVDF top coats resist salt.

From our engineers

Where steel roofs leak, and how we detail them

Laps on low slopes. Through-fixed sheet needs enough slope and sealed laps. Below about 5° we recommend standing seam.
Penetrations. Every pipe and fan through the roof is a leak path. Group them and use factory flashings.
Gutters. Box gutters are sized for local rainfall intensity with overflows, not just to match the eave.
Thermal movement. Long sheets expand. Fixings and clips allow it, or fasteners loosen and leak.

Cladding questions

Not answered here? Ask an engineer.

Which sheet coating should I choose?

Galvalume (AZ) with polyester paint for most sites; PVDF or higher AZ coatings for coastal or industrial exposure.

Insulation with a continuous vapour barrier, plus ventilation. We specify both with the panel.

Panel and coil brands to be confirmed.

We frame the openings and can supply roller doors and windows on request.
