China fabricates more structural steel than any other country. Price is rarely the problem; matching specification, records and logistics to your project is.

Seven steps

StepWhat to doWhat to ask for
1. ShortlistFabricators with similar projectsReferences with tonnage and scope
2. AuditVideo or on-site visitEquipment list, QC staff, certificates
3. QuoteSame drawings to eachBOM, scope matrix, exclusions
4. ContractScope, specs, schedule, penaltiesITP, payment milestones
5. InspectThird party at hold pointsNDT and dimensional reports
6. ShipLoading plan, documentsPacking list, B/L, certificate of origin
7. ErectManual, supervisorsMarking plan, bolt lists

Red flags

  • No mill certificates traceable to members
  • Price per ton with no tonnage or BOM
  • Refusal of third-party inspection
  • No written scope of exclusions

Payment terms

Common terms are a deposit plus balance against shipping documents, or a letter of credit. Large projects are paid by milestone.

Check scope, not just price. Most disputes come from what was assumed to be included.
