Steel Buildings

Steel buildings for grain reserves and bulk materials

Stored grain, fertiliser or ore pushes on the walls, and the push changes as the pile is filled from one side. Fertiliser also attacks bare steel. Those two facts, not the roof span, set the design of a bulk store.

We do not supply silos. We supply flat stores, sheds and the structures around silos.

Wall pressure

What we need to size the walls

InputWhy it matters
Material and bulk unit weightPressure is proportional to weight; fertiliser and ore are heavier than grain
Angle of repose and wall frictionSets how much of the pile pushes sideways
Pile height against the wallPressure grows with depth; the top metre is light, the bottom is not
Filling and emptying methodFilling from one side or by loader gives uneven, asymmetric load
Vehicles insideLoader impact and surcharge at the wall base

Material properties per EN 1991-4 Annex E or tested values. Deep bins follow Janssen theory; flat stores are closer to retaining wall pressure.

Rule we design to: material against the wall is retained by concrete push walls up to pile height. Steel columns and cladding start above the pile. Where steel walls take grain directly, we design heavy girts and sheeting for the full pressure.
Fertiliser and salt

Why bulk stores corrode from the inside

Many fertilisers are hygroscopic: they draw moisture from the air and form a corrosive solution on any steel they touch. Damage is fastest at the base of columns and where dust settles.

Checks beyond the structure

Dust explosion

Grain, sugar and coal dust can explode. Follow NFPA 61 or ATEX zoning: venting, earthing of the frame, cleanable surfaces.

Ventilation and aeration

Roof monitors, louvres and floor aeration ducts set openings in the frame.

Loader impact

Column bases protected with concrete plinths or guards.

Inspection access

Walkways along trusses for inspection and cleaning.

الأسئلة الشائعة

Bulk storage questions

Not answered here? اسأل مهندسًا.

Can steel walls take grain pressure directly?

For low piles, yes, with heavy girts and sheeting. For higher piles, concrete push walls take the pressure and steel sits above.

Typically galvanizing plus a C5 top coat with sealed details, and no steel in contact with the material.

Yes, galleries, trestles and transfer towers, coordinated with your conveyor supplier.

No. We supply flat stores, sheds and the structures around silos.
