Shipping steel from China, planned with the shop drawings
Freight is decided when member lengths are set. A beam detailed 30 cm too long can cost a flat rack. We plan transport with the detailing, and ship the documents your customs broker needs.

Container, flat rack or break-bulk?
| Option | Inside size / limit | Use for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20GP | 5.9 × 2.35 × 2.39 m | Bolts, plates, short dense items | Weight limit reached before volume |
| 40HQ | 12.03 × 2.35 × 2.69 m; members up to about 11.8 m | Most members | Volume limit before weight; typically 18–24 t of members |
| 40FR flat rack | 12 m bed, open sides and top | Wide, tall or heavy pieces | Out-of-gauge surcharge; lashing and weather protection |
| Break-bulk | Vessel limits | Long trusses, heavy girders | Fewer sailings; longer booking lead time |
Why steel rusts at sea, and what prevents it
Container condensation
Containers heat by day and cool at night; moisture condenses on steel. Desiccant bags and ventilation reduce it.
Coating protection
Shop coating cured before loading; dunnage between layers; wrapping at lashing points.
Small parts
Bolts and plates in sealed, labelled boxes per zone.
Photos at loading
Each container photographed open and sealed, with the seal number recorded.
What ships with each consignment
| Dokumen | Tujuan | Common problem |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial invoice | Customs value and description | Vague description triggers inspection |
| Packing list by member mark | Contents and weights per container | Hand-typed lists cause short-shipment disputes |
| Bill of lading | Title to the cargo | Name or consignee mismatch |
| Certificate of origin (incl. RCEP or China-ASEAN Form E where eligible) | Preferential duty | Issued late or with wrong HS code |
| Mill certificates and QC records | Technical compliance | Missing link to member marks |
| Fumigation certificate | Timber packing (ISPM 15) | Untreated dunnage held at port |
| Export licence copy, if required for the products shipped | China export control | Delays at export declaration |
China’s steel export licence
From 1 January 2026, MOFCOM and China Customs require export licences for certain steel products (Announcement No. 79 of 2025). Licences are issued against an export contract and a quality certificate from the producing mill.
- We check the HS code of each product on your order against the licence list before contract
- Whether fabricated structures (HS 7308) are covered: to confirm with our customs broker
- If a licence is needed, its timing is built into the shipping date
- Mill certificates must come from the producing mill, which our traceability already requires

Delivering past the port
Our Laos project went by sea and then by road to a landlocked site. That route changes member lengths, packing and documents.
- Member lengths set for road permits, not only containers
- Transit and import documents prepared before each convoy
- Delivery sequence matched to erection, so the site is not flooded with steel
