Design drawings vs shop drawings: what each one is for

Design drawings say what the structure must be. Shop drawings say how each piece is made. Confusing them is a common cause of delays and claims.

Approval

Shop drawings are submitted to the engineer of record, who checks them against the design and returns them coded (approved, approved with comments, revise). Fabrication starts only after approval.

Responsibility stays where it was: approving shop drawings does not transfer design responsibility to the fabricator, unless the contract says so.
