Steel detailing and connection design, with responsibility written down

Most disputes on steel projects start with one question: who was responsible for that detail? This page sets out what we design, what we only draw, and what happens when a drawing is wrong.

Service levels

Three levels, three different responsibilities

Connection design (delegated)Design of connections from member forces on your drawingsYour engineer for members; our engineer for connectionsContractors with IFC drawings

Local stamping: most countries require a locally registered engineer to sign structural design. We provide calculations and drawings in the format your engineer needs; we do not claim a stamp we cannot give.

Connection design

Who designs the connections, by code

CodeOptionsWhat we provide
AISC 303 (USA)Option 1: shown in full by the EOR. Option 2: fabricator completes simple connections from tables. Option 3: delegated to the fabricator’s licensed engineerOptions 2 and 3, with calculations for your EOR’s review
EN 1993-1-8 (Europe)Joints designed by the designer or delegated with execution specificationJoint calculations per EN 1993-1-8
GB 50017 (China)Usually the design institute shows main joints; fabricator completes detailsJoint calculations and node drawings

Typical review turnaround we plan for: 5–10 working days per batch; typical rounds: 2. Your specification may set its own codes.

When a drawing is wrong

Who pays for detailing errors

CauseWho is responsibleWhat happens
Our detail does not match the approved designGGSteelWe fix or remake the member at our cost
Dimension or hole error in our shop drawingGGSteelSame, even if your engineer approved the sheet
Design drawing was wrong or changedYour engineerChange logged with cost and time before we proceed
Site conditions differ from drawingsBy contractSite fix proposed and priced
Approval does not move responsibility. Under AISC 303, approval confirms that we read the design correctly; we remain responsible for the dimensions and details in our shop drawings.

Clashes we look for before you see the drawings

Rebar through steel. In SRC columns, rebar holes, couplers and studs are placed from a combined model. CGN HQ is a project of this type.
Services through beams. Duct and pipe openings in webs are agreed before detailing, with reinforcement where needed.
Splices and cranes. Splice positions follow crane capacity and transport length, not only member forces.

Can you work from Revit or Rhino models?

Yes. We import via IFC into Tekla and report anything that does not translate.

About 2–4 weeks for 1,000–3,000 t, issued by zone so fabrication can start earlier.

Yes, for connections and scheme design. Your local engineer of record keeps responsibility for the structure.
